Dry spell sparks fires at Punggol and Jurong East

At least two patches of brush caught fire yesterday at Punggol and Jurong East.
Fire broke out at the junction of Punggol Waterway and Punggol Road,
resulting in a blaze the size of a football field, said the Singapore
Civil Defence Force, which received a call at about 5.20pm. Two fire
engines, a Red Rhino and a support vehicle were sent there. No one was
injured, and the fire was put out before 6.45pm.
Punggol 17th Avenue resident Mr Tan Xingwen said he and his family had
been driving out for dinner when they were caught in a jam on Punggol
Road. “We saw a big brush fire beside the road, and saw smoke all over
the place,” said the 29-year-old accountant.
In Jurong East, a grass patch caught fire near the IMM mall at about
lunchtime, said a contributor to citizen-journalism website Stomp.
The current bout of dry weather has led to more vegetation fires this
year. Last Thursday evening, a fire broke out in a forested area at
Sunset Way, while in January, there were vegetation fires at Clementi
Avenue 6 and Commonwealth Drive.
